1. Pumpkins. This includes jack o’lanterns, pumpkins as decoration, and various pumpkin-derived foods, such as: pumpkin soup (be still, my stomach), pumpkin bread and muffins, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin pie.
2. Other flavors of autumn: warm soups and stews, tea, hot cocoa with marshmallows, sweet potato fries, allspice and cloves, cinnamon and ginger. And candy corn.
3. Wearing short skirts with tall boots and not freezing to death.
4. The chilly damp tang to the air, especially in the evening, when you can almost taste the crispness, edged with a tinge of decaying leaves and smoke.
5. Halloween, with the costumes, consumable goodies, and discernable glee of children.
6. The leaves changing colors (I have two Japanese maples in my yard) and eventually falling off and collecting in large crispy heaps.
7. Toasting by the fireplace for the first time in months, and watching Nala the Hound’s glee at being able to sleep by the fire again.
What do you love about the fall?
This post is making me unreasonably happy. Perhaps because I’m excited about autumn too.
My favorite thing is that subtle change in the air, the way it gets colder and crisper. A sign of the world shifting, of a next stage beginning. It always makes me excited, probably because of how much I loved winter as a kid and how exciting it was that it was finally coming up.
Did you love winter because of the snow (which as a CA girl still fascinates me) or because of something else?
I think the snow was a huge part of it. You would wake up some days and the world was completely silent and covered in white, and the air was crisp and clear and one just had a tremendous urge to go outside and throw a snowball at something. And then the next day it would be bright and sunny and still covered in snow. It was all pretty exciting, really… plus it made spring all the better too, because suddenly all of the trees were budding after being barren for months.
The Bay Area’s weather just isn’t as exciting. 🙂
I love autumn too, but winter…not so much. in my ideal world we would just skip straight to spring again.
Yeah, I’m not the biggest winter fan either. I do okay until January, and then I’m ready to skip straight to May. 🙂
In my ideal world, it would be autumn all year round. I love the changing leaves, the colour of the moonlight through the orange and red leaves during an Indian summer night, the sunsets . . . autumn forever please!
I see your point, Rich! But personally I’m pretty fond of summer too. 🙂
